In order to obtain this permit you must:
- Be between the ages of 15 and 15 ½ years old
- Present a completed Affidavit of Liability and Guardianship
- Present a completed Affidavit of Completion of Driver Education Classroom Course (like the Colorado Driver Education
Online course) within 6 months of applying for your permit
Those who hold a driver education permit may only drive with a driver education instructor and the person who signed their Affidavit of Liability until they reach the age of 18. Holders of this license are not required to complete a driver awareness program or obtain a driver awareness permit before getting their license. You must hold your driver education permit for at least 12 months before you can apply for your driver’s license. A driver education permit is valid for three years from the date issued.

If you are under the age of 18 you must hold your minor instruction permit for 12 months before applying for your driver's license. A minor instruction permit costs $10.60. It is valid for three years from the date of issue.
